Prayer Shawl for Grandma

Okay, so the last time I left you I think I told you that I was working on a prayer shawl for my husbands grandmother.

Well, here are some pictures and details of the shawl :-)

Pattern: Persuasion Shawl from Creative Knitting September 2007 Issue

Yarn
: Yarn Bee Soft Delight Extremes in EX Red

Alterations
: The pattern calls for a 17 stitch repeat 12 times. Instead I repeated it 15 times to make it a little longer. Especially since the yarn is a different weight than is called for in the pattern.

Handy Tip: I used a crochet hook instead of a knitting needle in my right hand to bind off. This made the whole process much faster and much more constant. For those of you who crochet you can think of it as just binding off each stitch with a slip stitch...exact same thing as a knitted bind off only you use a crochet hook to pull the new loop through the previous loop! VERY EASY! If you all want a tutorial I will post on one ThePurseWorkshop.com

Little Extra: I really wanted to make a shawl pin to match the shawl. However, I had never made jewelry before and wasn't sure where to start. SO, I went to Hobby Lobby and asked so many people in the beading isle what do to. In the end I made this really simple yet handy shawl pin to go with the prayer shawl!

Grandma loved the shawl and was moved to tears when I explained to her that a prayer shawl is made with love and the knitter spends time thinking and praying for the recipient.

She was touched that I worked on it in the waiting room all through the surgery. The family was impressed too. I got atleast two request for one as a Christmas Gift :-) Good thing I have a lot of that yarn huh?

I am happy to say that all turned out very well with Grandma and she is excited to have a chilly day so she can wear her shawl :-)

All in all, I would totally make this shawl again! I LOVED the yarn bee yarn and was very pleased with the color displacement...no pooling at all! You can bet on me making another one or two. Maybe one in Green and one in Purple.

What a wonderful gift! It came out lovely. And I'm so glad to hear that your grandmom is doing better.

I am so envious of your yarn in how it didn't pool. I have been cutting my stole every 16 rows to break the colors. I am beginning to hate weaving in the ends.

Marly,
I just read your post about the Pampered Chef at 5elementkntrs site and I had to share a story.

my good friend, due any day now was teaching her music class (Kindergarten) while she was 7 mo. pregnant. On one of the first days of school, a K'er asked her, "why are you so fat?" Not wanting to get into the whole baby thing, (they were already certain that she was growing an egg that was going to be laid and hatched at the hospital) she used it as a "teachable moment" and said that maybe that wasn't the best thing to ask and could he thing of some other way to ask that? He said, "Why are you so fat, please?" HA!

The shawl is beautiful, and your shawl pin turned out great! I'm glad I got to see it in person :)

I'd love a demonstration on a crochet bind off; I always hear how easy it is!

Lucky Grandma to have your prayers, love, AND such a beautiful shawl from you. I love the pin you made to go with it. Good job!

That is one beautiful shawl!

And OMG the crochet bind off! That sounds SO easy. I am going to try it as soon as I have something finshed to bind off. That may be a while...

Your prayer shawl is beautiful. I use YB Soft Delight to make kids hats - usually the fuschia and the dark blue. They turn out really nice and the kids like that they're soft and don't itch.
