Long time lurker on bloglines stepping out of obscurity with a word of warning: Be careful! The Twisted German cast on is pretty firm for top down. It's basically the longtail with a row of knitting attached. I've seen patterns that call for this cast on to be used for toe up socks similarly to a figure-8, but haven't personally used it. If you try it, I'll be interested in the results!
This is the cast-on I learnd when I learned to knit, really!
